We are hiring a Head of QA to lead our QA Community of Practice and work within our senior leadership team to support and encourage continuous improvement across the tech department. This is a chance to have impact, support and grow the capability of our QA Engineers, to help them and their teams to deliver no-nonsense, quality and test-driven software solutions for our business and end-users.
The ideal candidate would have experience coaching and mentoring teams and individuals to be the best version of themselves at the right pace. They will have experience in delivering software solutions that reflect our four pillars; work in the open, deliver value safely and quickly, create a learning environment, and make data driven decisions.
They champion DevOps practices and encourage others to ‘shift left’ and can articulate and explain the benefits of this to a wide range of audience with different roles. They have a good understanding of Automation needs and where manual testing still has value and is able to help teams set milestones and support the teams to build Test Automation frameworks.
They will provide line management for QA engineers, set and agree on individual goals and career progression plans according to the roles’ expected behaviours and competencies. They will ensure the human element in their management style and find the balance between hands-on support and enablement in a safe environment.
At Footasylum we have multidisciplinary teams made up of a delivery manager, a product owner, designers, software engineers, Devops engineers and QA engineers. We like to keep our teams small enough that they become a unit of delivery, but large enough that people can pair and mob on tasks and knowledge can be shared out.
Our teams are stream aligned, working closely or as part of the business function that they deliver value for. These areas include retail, logistics, finance, merchandising, customer loyalty, ecommerce and a platform team that creates a single source of truth for all these teams.
We use our communities of practice to provide support for those in similar disciplines. We recognise that along with our day-to-day job it is important to take time alongside the product managers, designers, delivery managers and senior team to improve how we work within our disciplines.
Within your current role, you are someone who can bring people and teams together. Your communication to the team and business is always crystal clear. You can quickly visualise the challenge and bring together the right people to ask the probing questions and to make the right decisions. Your teams see you as a leader, coach, and mentor. Always there to help, support and encourage ideas along with ensuing no-one is left behind on the journey.
As a part of the Senior Leadership Team, you have the urge to understand the bigger picture and how decisions at this level impact the department as a whole and can think beyond your area of expertise. You will work together and support your peers daily and represent the SLT with accountability and reliability. You have a strategic approach to planning and budgeting, and you are comfortable in making recommendations to the rest of SLT based on your observations.
You can assess current business processes and disciplines to help use them to meet business objectives and have a pragmatic approach to problem solving and focus your efforts on ‘turning the lights on’. You can quickly analyse and visualise the challenge and connect the right people to ask the right questions leading to actionable decisions.
You enjoy mentoring others and have experience in helping QA engineers develop their knowledge and skills. You really understand the role of a QA engineer within a team, and how they should be creating context, safety, and a shared understanding of the problems, and not seen simply as a quality gate, and you’ll help define better practices that we can share with the wider department to help create a culture of continuous learning.
- Work as part of the tech leadership team to define and refine our values, approach to work, recruitment, and budget planning.
- Build relationships with the key stakeholders to understand the business challenges, constraints and value that can be created from the teams.
- Enable the QAs to be part of the whole journey of SDLC and help teams understand the difference between testing and quality
- Coach the QA team to ask probing questions about functional and non-functional requirements using qualitive, quantitative data and experience, so they have the autonomy to work together to create value.
- Mentoring and 121’s with QA engineers, creating objectives for improving and learning new skills.
- Planning and implementing succession plans.
- Leading and championing the CoP for QA.
- Guide teams to work towards the four pillars, showing what “good” looks like.
- Help teams understand how QA can help deliver value safely and quickly.
- Contribute in the architectural design working with the Heads of and Principals.
- Creating documents or visualisations to help teams understand the objectives, strategy, and vision.
